Community Engagement

HRRS offers Community Engagement services to adults with developmental disabilities in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. This service is designed to support clients in accessing a variety of events and activities in their community and in developing the skills needed to participate in these interests. Individuals are encouraged to meet and build relationships with others in their community.

How it works:
Clients start by choosing which days they want to participate in the program. The typical week runs from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Monday – Friday), but this can be customized based on the interests and constraints of each client. Clients will then meet with our QDDP and Program Managers to develop a schedule of activities that they want to participate in. Some examples that past clients have chosen include: volunteering at local charities, participating in public events, maintaining relationships with family and friends, trips to the beach, restaurants, local shops, parks, libraries and community centers. Once a schedule has been determined, clients can begin meeting with one of our trained Direct Support Professionals to go out to their chosen activities and will be supported in developing the skills needed to participate in these activities as independently, as possible. Clients will be in a group no larger than three clients per Direct Support Professional.

 

Accessibility: All of HRRS’ vehicles are wheelchair-accessible. Staff are trained in transferring clients, using hoyer lifts, stair lifts, wheelchairs and ramps, as needed.

Expertise: HRRS’ team of Direct Support Professionals are all trained and assessed on an annual basis to meet DBHDS’ standards in the following advanced competencies:

• Autism Supports

• Behavioral Supports

• Health and G-Tube Supports

Eligibility:

Individuals must be at least 18 years of age and receiving the Community Living Waiver through Medicaid. If you are unsure of your waiver status, please contact your Support Coordinator or local Community Service Board (provide links).

 

Areas Served:
Open to individuals with a pickup location in Williamsburg, Newport News, or Hampton. If you live outside of these areas, we may still be able to provide service if a pickup location is agreed upon inside one of these cities.

 

Pricing:

Individuals in our Community Engagement service are responsible for their own meals and personal shopping. Clients are not charged any fees by HRRS for this service.
